What is normally needed to become a healthcare assistant
There is no single universal pre-entry qualification for every healthcare assistant role. Employers set their own requirements, but they commonly look for literacy, numeracy, relevant experience, safe recruitment checks and evidence that the applicant understands compassionate care.
The 16 Care Certificate standards introduced in 2025
For workers in England who are new to health or adult social care, employers commonly use the Care Certificate during induction. The updated 2025 framework contains these 16 standards:

How the Care Certificate is completed
Completing online learning alone is not enough. Skills for Care states that knowledge and practical competence must be assessed in the workplace. The employer is responsible for deciding whether a worker has demonstrated each standard and for issuing the Care Certificate.
Progressing to a regulated qualification
After preparation, Prude Consulting can signpost a trainee to an approved centre offering the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate, qualification number 610/4131/2. NCFE is an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation and the qualification appears on Skills for Care's approved qualifications list.
This regulated qualification is portable, but there is no standalone Care Certificate certification exam. An approved centre registers the learner and assesses knowledge and workplace competence using methods such as written evidence, professional discussion, witness evidence and observation. Learners normally need access to an adult social care workplace so practical competence can be assessed.
