  • People who feel anxious about practice tests or hazard clips

Official test requirements

What you need to pass the car theory test and progress to the practical test

The car theory test has two separately scored parts. You must pass both the multiple-choice questions and hazard perception in the same appointment.

43 / 50Required to pass the multiple-choice section, which allows 57 minutes.
44 / 75Required to pass hazard perception across 14 video clips.
Both partsIf one part is failed, the full theory test must be taken again.
Valid for 2 yearsThe practical driving test must be passed before the theory certificate expires.

Before booking the theory test

  1. Hold a valid provisional UK driving licence
  2. Normally be at least 17 for a car theory test
  3. Study the Highway Code
  4. Study Know Your Traffic Signs
  5. Use the Official DVSA Guide to Driving - the essential skills
  6. Practise multiple-choice questions under time limits
  7. Practise identifying developing hazards early
  8. Book through the official GOV.UK service

What to take to the theory test

In England, Scotland and Wales, take your UK photocard driving licence. If you have a Northern Ireland licence, take both the photocard and paper counterpart. Without the correct licence, the test is cancelled and the fee is not refunded.

Moving on to the practical car test

The practical test includes an eyesight check, a vehicle safety question, approximately 40 minutes of driving, a reversing exercise and about 20 minutes of independent driving. To pass, you must make no serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 driving faults. Practical skills should be taught and assessed by an approved driving instructor.

Where the official test is taken

Prude Consulting can prepare and signpost a learner, but only the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) can provide the official Great Britain theory-test booking route and issue an official result. The test is booked through GOV.UK and taken at an official theory test centre. Pearson VUE supports delivery of DVSA theory tests at the authorised centre network.

There is no Prude Consulting certificate that replaces a DVSA pass. Learners should book only through the official GOV.UK service, where they can choose an authorised test centre, request approved support arrangements and manage the appointment.
